Buying a Boat

March 24, 2017

Harbor 9 Marina Buying a Boat

Purchasing a boat—like acquiring a home, a car or other major asset—is a big decision. Before you buy, consider the various types of boats:  cruising boats, fishing boats, and watersport crafts.

Cruising boats typically center around relaxing, entertaining guests, and providing other modern comforts (some even have cabins for overnight stays). Examples of cruising boats may include deck boats, pontoon boats, motor yachts, bowriders, express cruisers, trawlers and more.

By comparison, fishing boats are just what they sound like: boats intended primarily to aid in fishing. Types of fishing boats may include Jon boats, cuddy cabin/walkaround boats, flats boats, bass boats and other sportsman-friendly designs.

If you are an adrenaline junkie, you may be more interested in a vehicle specifically suited to watersports, such as a ski boat, wakeboard boat, jet boat or other personal watercraft.

Whatever type of craft you ultimately choose to purchase, it is important to price out different brands and models, new and used. You should also make sure you are aware of the maintenance upkeep, fueling, and storage needs related to your particular choice of boat.

If you plan to take your boat out often during the summer season, you should consider docking your boat rather than moving it back and forth on a trailer. Harbor 9 Marina on St. Clair Shores in southeast Michigan, offers up to 100 boat slips with 24-hour key card access and winter heated storage options. Contact Harbor 9 Marina to learn more about purchasing a boat or slip.

Getting Your Boat Ready for Boating Season

February 22, 2017

Harbor 9 Marina Getting Your Boat Ready for Boating Season

As February feels like spring here in Michigan and the lakes begin to thaw, it signals one thing to boaters:  the start of preparation for the boating season. Getting your boat ready for its first outing of the year takes a little more than just wiping it clean and stocking it with cold drinks. Below are a few important steps to help you get your craft into top shape.

  1. Check for any needed repairs

Check the hull, deck and other areas of the boat for any damage you may have missed, or that may have happened during the winter. Serious damage should be repaired completely before taking the boat out.

  1. Clean, maintain, and wax

Clean everything thoroughly with a mild detergent. Perform any necessary maintenance on drains, flush your water tank, lubricate where needed, etc. Wax your boat for a protective shine.

  1. Inspect safety equipment and fittings

Make sure your boat has all necessary fittings and safety equipment, like life jackets/rafts, ground tackle, and lifelines.

  1. Check electrical systems

Check your battery levels, make sure all wiring is intact and test all onboard electronics for functioning.

  1. Check engine fluids (inboard engines), spark plugs (outboard motors), etc.

Be certain that your inboard engine/outboard motor is in good working condition with appropriate fluid levels/functioning spark plugs, etc.

  1. Make sure you are registered/licensed

Remember to always check that your trailer is properly registered for the year and that your boating license is still valid.
